Town of Spruce Pine
Mitchell County Chamber of Commerce
Spruce Pine is the western North Carolina town I visited five years ago when I first began rock collecting in and studying the Spruce Pine Mining District. It is located at the intersection of Routes 19E and 226N about eight miles west of our cabin.

Spruce Pine located on the Toe River. The railroad was constructed in the 1870s and was critical to the development of the forestry, farming, and mining industries in the area.

The town basically consists of two main streets, one is "lower street", AKA Locust Street, which is located next to the railroad tracks and hosts restaurants, shops, and small businesses.

DT's hosts our bridge club from November through May and is a great pace to stop for coffee and a snack or lunch.

Daniel Diel, who has one of our puppies, Chou-Lin, is no longer the Executive Chef and General Manager of the Tin Lizzard. So, we are looking for a new place to have our Chef's Table events.

Upper Street, AKA Walnut Street, hosts banks, shops, restaurants, and small businesses.

Our friends, Don and Ann Wyatt who look after our cabin when we are gone live on Pine Avenue.

Bud Philllips who is one of North Carolina's largest land owners operates out of the Mitchell Lumber Company. He has forested, farmed, and mined in the Spruce Pine area for sixty years and is a wealth of information.

The Carolina Theater (next to the Tin Lizzard), is in the process of rennovation. It hosted the performances of many early "blue grass" greats such as Earl Monroe.

I stayed at the Richmond Inn for my first two trips to the area and later with Diana after we were married. Maggie, the owner and operator of the Richmond Inn has become a good friend.

We use the Richmond Inn for our friends to stay who attend our annual "Rice Road West Picnic and Folk Fest". Last summer, Diana's daughter Ginny was married here.
It was a beautiful wedding and lots of fun.
